You won't believe it, but way back there in 1956, nations were rocking and heads were rolling, all because of the latest craze in popular songs, 'rock and roll' music. There were riots in city after city, coast to coast, and the infection even spread to England and the continent. 'Rock and Roll Banned', screamed Ihe headlines. 'It's immoral', muttered the old guard in their beards. __________________ Well sir, long hefore that it was the Bunny Hug or the Charleston that had 'em shaking their boo-boo-boo-hooin' in the 30's, the kids started screaming just like they screamed when Elvis Presley shook his guitar at them in the late 50's. So let's face it: change The arrival of the new and the vital always created an uproar. But if it is really new and rcally vital, it will find its permanent place in the scheme of things. 'Rhythm & Blues' played long before that time. The music could be rough, raucous and rowdy, and rhydthm & blues lyrics tended to be crude. But that 'beat' was really vital, and the kids felt it and loved it, and something was added to the world of song. _______________________ Things can't and won't remain just the way they are today. Tomorrow something new will come along, and we'll all be the richer for it. It was always that way, and it always will be, in music as in other things. _______________________ Table of Contents POPULAR SONG CATEGORIES THE SIX PUBLISHER TYPES PUBLISHER TYPES (Continued) POP PUBLISHER VIEWPOINT TECHNICAL CATEGORIES-MUSIC TYPES LYRIC TYPES THE OTHER FIVE LYRIC TYPES TITLES WRITING THE CHORUS S0NG STRUCTURE COMPLETING THE CHORUS MELODY WRITING MELODY WRITING (Continued) HARMONY IN POPULAR SONGS HARMONY AS AID IN MELODY·WRITING LYRIC WRITING LYRIC WRITING (Continued) BLEND OF LYRIC AND MUSIC THE VERSE ARRANGING THE SONG SUMMING IT UP SELLING YOUR SONG SONG SHARKS SELLING YOUR SONG SUCCESS How PUBLISHERS OPERATE THE BIG PUSH MUSIC ORGANIZATIONS THE GRAVY TRAIN
