FOREWORD

DEAR READER:

As a writer and speaker on the subject of extrasensory

perception, or ESP, I am constantly being

asked, "Where can I have my ESP tested?" Those

who put this question usually assume that their

potential gifts of clairvoyance, telepathy or precognition

(foreknowledge) should be put to the test

through a series of complex experiments, against a

background of flashing lights, humming computers

and forbidding-looking statistical charts. While

these paraphernalia are, indeed, part of the laboratory

setting for a good deal of ESP testing, they are

not essential to the kind of experiment that the

average person might want to undertake.

It isn't the equipment that counts. What matters

are the controls exercised during a test, and just

how the results are evaluated. You can arrange perfectly

tight and scientifically acceptable experiments

in your own living room. Just make sure you follow

the techniques outlined in this book. If you do, your

results can be more solid than those achieved with

a battery of computers but lacking in experimental care.

The experimental methods used in this volume

are mainly those developed by the Institute for Parapsychology

of Durham, North Carolina. The Institute

is part of the Foundation for Research on

the Nature of Man, successor of the well-known

Parapsychology Laboratory which functioned from

1927 to 1965 at Duke University. Dr. J. B. Rhine,

who directed the Duke Laboratory and now heads

the F.R.N.M., stated in the symposium Parapsychology:

From Duke to FRNM (Durham, 1965) that

"public interest in parapsychology seems to be a

steady development in itself, rather than a passing

flurry or fad." However until now, laboratory work

has been so demanding that staff members of the

Institute for Parapsychology simply have not found

time to communicate their experiences and methods

to the general public. This book should act as a

bridge across this gap.
