When our two boys were very young, you would take them away for a part of each summer. To divert my loneliness, I worked then on some ideas which are now in “The Door of Rock" In 1932, we moved to our home now, Arden, just outside of Richmond, Virginia, and until the war, the four of us were much together and always close together. We had a most happy home, so that now every part of it is filled with gracious and tender memories.

In 1941,I was sick at heart in seeing our country draw ever closer to the first global war, and, to get relief from my forebodings, I reworked those old papers, putting them finally, in February, 1942, into the present form of “The Door of Rock".

There is no inherent reason why I should publish my ideas as to the historical evidence of immortality. Those whose faith is based on revealed religion will not quarrel with anything I have said, but will hold it useless to have repeated a part of the great truth.

Others will disagree or criticize on various grounds, for the minds of men work very differently. However, it does mean much to me that, before sorrow came to us, we had recorded our faith. The words are mine, but the thoughts are ours. We lived by what we believed before death came to our gallant and beautiful boys, and neither its first coming nor its second coming has changed our steadfast convictions.

In 1927, in those far-off days when the boys were three and one, I was once weary of studying the terrible stories used in “The Door of RocJ(’, and, as a relief, wrote quickly a little sketch, “Ramblings”. Through all the years, it lay half forgotten until Grayson s death. I remembered it then and we saw that it set out our vision for our boys. Their lives were the superb fulfillment of our dreams. So this sketch and a supplement just written are included.

I want very much to speak, however poorly, of my pride in you, and I publish these papers now so that I may lay in your sweet hands this little tribute to your gentle nobility and to your tender courage. Your love has made my life and it is good to be with you as we turn to face together the coming years.
